Biography of Philip Avdeev

Philip Avdeev is a Russian theater and film actor, director, and dubbing actor. Philip became famous for his roles in the films “Correction Class” and “Summer”. Philip is one of the leading actors of the famous Gogol Center and the Seventh Studio troupe under the direction of Kirill Serebrennikov.

Childhood and youth

Philip Avdeev was born on November 10, 1991 in Moscow. He received his secondary general education at school No. 1297. According to Avdeev, for some time as a child he dreamed of becoming an architect, but the boy did not succeed in drawing.

Philip’s grandmother contributed to the development of her acting talent, teaching him poetry and taking him to dances. His grandmother’s efforts bore fruit: at the age of 10, Philip became an actor in the notorious musical “Nord-Ost,” which was staged at the Theater Center on Dubrovka. On the day of the terrorist attack in the theater in October 2002, Avdeev was also among the hostages. The boy managed to escape – he escaped through the lattice fence of the theater.

“Now I understand that it was then that I matured,” says Philip. Avdeev continued to take part in the musical in the future, replacing the deceased little actor who had previously played in the first cast.

Like many other talented children, Avdeev starred in “Jumble” and performed at the Children’s Musical Theater for Young Actors – this continued until graduation. He had no questions regarding his choice of profession – after graduating from school, Philip submitted documents to the Moscow Art Theater School. At first, Avdeev’s father was indignant and called studying at a theater university “child’s games,” but he quickly realized that everything was serious and changed his mind. So Philip became a student of the experimental acting and directing course of Kirill Serebrennikov and Evgenia Dobrovolskaya. Serebrennikov set his main task to educate artists who were ready to work in the most unusual projects. Avdeev and his classmates, among whom was his longtime friend Alexander Gorchilin, as well as Alexandra Revenko, Rinal Mukhametov and other actors already known today, learned not only to embody diverse dramatic roles, but also to sing, dance, and compose music. But most importantly, they were already carried away by the spirit of experimentation that reigned in Serebrennikov’s classes, and were ready for absolutely any transformation.

Theater

In 2009, Kirill Serebrennikov, together with the students of his course, founded the theater troupe “Seventh Studio”, which included Avdeev. The first performances took place at the Winzavod Center for Contemporary Art and at the Moscow Art Theater. Chekhov, and in 2012 the graduates settled in the Gogol Center theater created by Serebrennikov.

One of Avdeev’s first works on the stage of this theater – the role of Grisha Zhilin in Serebrennikov’s play “Thugs” based on the novel by Zakhar Prilepin, brought the actor the “Golden Leaf 2012” award in the “Best Actor” category. Among Philip’s other works in the theater is the role of Hamlet, desired by all actors (dir. David Bobet from France), topographer Petrov in the play “Kharms. Myr” (dir. Maxim Didenko) and the young nobleman and romantic Alexander Aduev in “An Ordinary History” based on the novel by Ivan Goncharov.

Philip also plays in Serebrennikov’s play “Who Lives Well in Rus’” based on the poem by Nikolai Nekrasov and two productions of the “Star” project (a series of plays about poets of the Silver Age), such as “Pasternak. My sister is life” and “Mandelshtam. Century the Wolfhound” with Chulpan Khamatova in the title role. For his performance of several roles in the last performance in 2016, Philip was awarded the Parabola Prize by the Foundation named after the poet Andrei Voznesensky.

Directing work in the theater

Avdeev tried his hand not only as an actor, but also as a director at the Gogol Center. Philip said that since the 4th year he asked Serebrennikov to stage something on stage, and now his dream finally came true. Avdeev’s directorial debut was the musical play “Iolanta / opus” – the fruit of the joint work of Philip and his colleagues, Alexander Gorchilin and Igor Bychkov. The premiere took place in January 2016. The production about the blind princess (Svetlana Mamresheva) used music not only by Tchaikovsky, but also by Alfred Schnittke, Francis Poulenc and Giacomo Puccini. Avdeev himself played one of the main roles in the play. In February 2017, Philip staged the play “Sea of Trees” based on the play by Lyuba Strizhak, which tells about a childhood that never ends. According to the artist, after the end of this project, obsession with work and hyper-responsibility began to let go of him. “Some kind of zeroing occurred, and with this feeling it became easier for me to live and work easier,” Avdeev shared.

The first film with Philip’s participation was released back in 2003 – the boy played one of the main roles in the adventure film by Evgeniy Sokolov “The Secret of the Blue Valley”. Also in the film appeared the star of “Jumble” Anna Tsukanova-Kott and the actor of the TV series “Molodezhka” Makar Zaporozhsky. Soon, Sokolov cast Avdeev in another of his projects – the serial melodrama “Nadezhda Goes Last” with Anna Germ in the title role.

In 2006, Avdeev received the main role in Oleg Kompasov’s adventure fantasy comedy “Aziris Nuna” about the journey through time and space of two teenage brothers (the brother of Avdeev’s hero was played by Roman Kerimov).

After a long break from filming, in 2014 Philip starred in a film that brought him real popularity and, most importantly, recognition among connoisseurs of auteur cinema. In Ivan Tverdovsky’s drama “Correction Class” about first teenage love, strength and weakness, Avdeev got the main role of schoolboy Anton Sobolev, the lover of new student Lena Chekhova (Maria Poezzhaeva), a girl in a wheelchair. Among other things, Philip and the other actors of “Seventh Studio” recorded the soundtrack for the film. Soon after the release of the film, which received a lot of positive reviews, Avdeev appeared in supporting roles in Yulia Belaya’s tragicomedy “City Birds” and Alexander Kott’s melodrama “Insight” about a man who starts life from scratch after losing his sight.

In June 2018, the long-awaited film by Kirill Serebrennikov “Summer” was released on the big screen, which was based on the history of the formation of the Kino group and the work of Viktor Tsoi (Teo Yu), his friendship with Mike Naumenko (Roma Zver) and Mike’s wife Natalya (Irina Starshenbaum). Philip played in the film a modest and responsible Kino guitarist named Leonid. The prototype of his hero was Alexey Rybin, a member of the first team.

Filming of the film “Summer” began in mid-2017 in St. Petersburg and lasted about two months until Serebrennikov was arrested on charges of misusing a government subsidy allocated to Studio Seven in the early 2010s. Serebrennikov edited the film under house arrest, unable to contact the film crew.
