“Lavrov, go home”: a rally was held in Mongolia against the visit of the Russian Foreign Minister

On the morning of July 5, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov arrived in Ulaanbaatar. He plans to hold meetings with the head of the Mongolian Foreign Ministry, the country’s president, the speaker of parliament and the prime minister.

At the same time, Mongolian activists and supporters of the Democratic Party organized a protest against the visit of the Russian Foreign Minister.

Protesters gathered in the center of Ulaanbaatar in front of the monument to the victims of political repression. The rally was organized by members of the Democratic Party of Mongolia E. Bat-Uul, D. Sosorbaram and G. Gankhuu

The protesters used posters and banners with slogans such as “Lavrov, go home”, “Stop insulting Mongolian democracy with Ambassador Azizov”, “Mongolia will not bend under Russia”. The protesters also displayed photographs of repressed Mongolian political figures and waved Mongolian national flags.

“Lavrov’s visit to Mongolia is being held in high secrecy. According to certain sources, Lavrov came to put pressure on Mongolia,” said the former mayor of Ulaanbaatar and chairman of the Bat-Uul Democratic Party Erdene.

According to local media reports, at some point a fight broke out between the protesters and the guards of the state residence. Details are not specified.

“We know what it’s like to be a Soviet satellite state. We lost 40 thousand innocent citizens when we were a satellite country of this power. The affairs of Mongolia were decided by Moscow,” Bat-Uul Erdene added during his speech.

The politician also noted that the people of Mongolia have tasted the taste of freedom over the past 30 years, and the state has become “free and noble.”

Honored Artist of Mongolia D. Sosorbaram, during his speech at the rally, accused Russian Ambassador Iskander Azizov of destroying Mongolian democracy and demanded his resignation.

“Lavrov, go home. Take with you Ambassador Azizov, who will not get rid of Mongolia,” D. Sosorbaram said.

It is worth noting that supporters of the Democratic Party of Mongolia have held similar anti-Russian rallies before. Thus, in May 2022, a protest rally under the slogan “Mongolia will not become Belarus” took place at the entrance to the National Historical Museum in Ulaanbaatar, the purpose of which was to condemn the foreign policy pursued by Russia.

On the eve of the rally, the head of the secretariat of the Democratic Party of Mongolia, A. Tserenbat, said that the authorities of the Russian Federation are establishing dictatorial regimes in them in order to control neighboring countries. The action was also organized by E.Bat-Uul and D.Sosorbaram.
