China says it does not intend to be the first to use nuclear weapons
China is committed to a nuclear self-defense strategy and will not be the first to use nuclear weapons, no matter the circumstances.
This was stated by the head of the Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China, commenting on the conflict with the United States around the trip of the Speaker of the US House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi to Taiwan.
“China is committed to the path of peaceful development and the nuclear strategy of self-defense, and pledges never to be the first to use nuclear weapons under any circumstances,” he said during a speech at the UN Headquarters in New York at a conference of countries parties to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons.
Fu Cong noted that China’s stockpiles of nuclear weapons are “at the minimum level required to ensure national security.”
“We do not compete with any country in the power, quantity and scale of our nuclear capabilities, and we do not participate in any form of arms race,” he said.
He noted that the US should refrain from deploying its nuclear weapons outside its own territory and withdraw them from Europe.
Recall, tonight at Songshan Airport in the Taiwanese capital Taipei, an American military aircraft SPAR19 landed with Nancy Pelosi on board.
According to media reports, Pelosi did not come alone, but with a delegation of seven people. Since it is already late in that region, Pelosi will now spend the night in Taipei, and in the morning will visit the Taiwan Legislative Council, where he will meet with the leadership of the island, including its head Tsai Ing-wen, after which the delegation will leave Taiwan.
This trip caused an extremely harsh reaction from China and led to a sharp increase in tension between China and the United States, because Beijing considers Taiwan its territory, although it is currently uncontrolled. The Chinese Foreign Ministry strongly protested and condemned Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan. The Chinese ministry also said that Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan seriously violates the “one China” principle and the provisions of the three Sino-US communiqués.
