Charges have been brought against the son of ex-President of Armenia Kocharyan

The son of former Armenian President Robert Kocharyan, Levon Kocharyan, has been detained on charges of beating four special forces police officers.

This was announced by his lawyer Alexander Kochubaev.

“From the numerous video frames posted on the Internet, it is obvious that this is a classic false denunciation, since the “berets” (special forces – editor’s note) themselves tortured Levon Kocharyan in the car,” Kochubaev wrote on one of the social networks.

The lawyer said that the detention of Levon Kocharyan has a political context and is an attempt by official Yerevan to suppress acts of civil disobedience.

The human rights activist added that the decision to detain Mr. Kocharyan was appealed in court.

Kocharyan was detained on September 22 during protests in the center of Yerevan in connection with citizens’ demand for the resignation of Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan due to his recognition of Nagorno-Karabakh as the territory of Azerbaijan.

On September 19, the Azerbaijani Ministry of Defense announced the start of a local anti-terrorist operation in Nagorno-Karabakh. The purpose of the operation was said to be the suppression of “large-scale provocations,” as well as the disarmament and withdrawal of Armenian army units from the region.

In turn, the Armenian Ministry of Defense rejected Azerbaijan’s statements that Armenian troops still remain on the territory of Nagorno-Karabakh.

A day later, through the mediation of Russian peacekeepers, an agreement was reached between the parties on a ceasefire in the region. Among the conditions of the truce were, in particular, the disarmament of Armenian forces and the withdrawal of heavy equipment.
